EFIRO 2024 Romania World Specialized Stamp Exhibition Report

By Henry Ong

After the formation of the International Philatelic Federation (FIP) in Paris on 18 June 1926, Romania is one of the early countries to organize an international stamp exhibition.  EFIRO 1932 was held from 20 – 30 November 1932 in Bucharest and subsequently more exhibition were held in the latter years.

Romania Specialized World Stamp Exhibition EFIRO 2024 is the most important exhibition event organized this year under the patronage of the International Philatelic Federation.  The exhibition is enhance by the Romania, a founding member hosting the jubilee exhibition in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.  The International Association of Philatelic Journalists (AIJP) also held their Congress during the exhibition.

EFIRO 2024 was held from 16 -19 April 2024 at the National Library of Romania in Bucharest.  A total of 554 exhibits were judged and the Jury teams have awarded 47 large Gold medals and 105 Gold medals.  The Grand Prix International was awarded to Joseph Hackmey for his exhibit ‘Classic Baden’ and the Grand Prix National was awarded to Ion Chirescu for his exhibit ‘Foreign Posts in The Romanian Territories, 1811-1878’.

The Jury report found that the quality of the exhibits shown is very high and are pleased to see many exhibits have made improvements since they were shown in previous stamp exhibitions.  11 exhibits were transferred to a different class to ensure they achieved better results.  Unfortunately, 11 exhibits (including literature) did not arrive and hence could not be judged.  5 exhibits were shown as photocopies and judged but will not be recorded in the FIP awards list.  A total of 31 items were removed from the frames for closer examination and the recommendations of the Expert Group were as follows:

No action required        6 items                                  Has to be certified      16 items

Do not exhibit again     1 item                                    Improve description     8 items

Singapore submitted a total of 8 exhibits.  Below is the information on the exhibits accepted and the awards given.  Congratulation to all winners!
